Justice Kennedy’s Retirement
ORLANDO, FL – Today, Rep. Val Demings (FL-10) commented on the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Said Rep. Demings, “I thank Justice Kennedy for his decades of service. The last Supreme Court seat was unjustly denied to President Obama. As a result, just this week the Court has upheld a discriminatory ban against Muslims seeking a better life in our country, undermined a woman’s right to make informed decisions about her own healthcare, and weakened the ability of workers to organize for fundamental workplace protections.
“As we consider letting President Trump appoint a second lifetime Supreme Court Justice, I will quote Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: ‘The next justice could fundamentally alter the direction of the Supreme Court and have a profound impact on our country, so of course the American people should have a say in the court’s direction.’
“Therefore, I agree with Mr. McConnell’s statement last year: no Supreme Court Justice should be confirmed until after this year’s election.”
