Rep. Demings Responds to Trump’s Police EO

June 16, 2020
Press Release

ORLANDO, FL – Rep. Demings released this statement following the President’s signing of a new executive order on policing:

Said Rep. Demings, “if the president truly supports real reform to law enforcement as he indicated today, then I fully expect him to support our Justice in Policing Act as it moves through the House and Senate. Public anger around racial injustice in America is justified and legitimate, and must be addressed, not simply appeased. We need tangible, enforceable legislative action, codified into U.S. law. We can’t cover up these problems with a new coat of paint. The only path forward is real structural reform, including true accountability.

“I support the Justice in Policing Act, which will establish tangible and meaningful reforms to save lives and heal the divide between officers and the communities they serve. This includes mandating de-escalation training, banning chokeholds and other neck restraints, establishing a national database to better track misconduct, and bringing transparency and accountability to policing.”
