Rep. Demings’ Statement on the 50th Anniversary of Dr. King’s Assassination
Today, Rep. Demings (FL-10) issued the following statement:
Said Rep. Demings, “Dr. King devoted his life to justice, and to peaceful action in the pursuit of that justice.
“The day before he was killed fifty years ago, Dr. King said, ‘let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation.’
“Americans today continue to seek justice. They continue to march, and organize, and speak out for what they believe is right. These demonstrations are not always comfortable. They are not meant to be. Discomfort is often necessary for change.
“Dr. King was taken from us too soon. But in his short years on earth, he changed our country and the world. Today, I urge my fellow Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Continue to ‘rise up with greater readiness.’ Continue to speak out, to march, and to organize, and always remember Dr. King’s lesson that nonviolent direct action is the only path to true justice.”
